For some retirees, it is their primary source of income.  You can find nearby Social Security offices to help you with tasks like replacing a lost or damaged card, applying for Social Security and Medicare benefits, or answering your questions.  Along with visiting a local office, you can also call a specialized toll-free number, or complete service requests online to save you time.

Complete Tasks Online

Going to the office can be a hassle because it requires time and transportation. If you would rather not travel to the Social Security office, there are many things you can do online, so you wouldn’t need to leave your home.  Here are some online tasks available on the SSA’s website:

Apply for Social Security benefits

Request a replacement card

Find forms

Calculate future benefits with the Retirement Estimator

Download your Social Security statements

Identify Social Security programs you are eligible for

Appeal a recent medical decision

Review your status

You can also complete other SSA tasks online such as blocking online and phone access to your Social Security information, which is critical for identity theft and domestic abuse victims. You can also create a My Social Security account to see all your SSA benefit information including statements and calculated retirement benefits. You can also update your contact information, change direct deposit preferences, download a benefit verification letter, request a Medicare replacement card, and obtain forms (SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S) for tax season.
