How to Get Around Jacksonville Without Driving

As you get older, you might find it’s harder to get around your city because either you don’t have a car or you aren’t able to drive anymore. Many senior drivers continue driving long past the time that it is safe to do so because they don’t think there are any other transportation options. There are plenty of ways to get around Jacksonville if you don’t or can’t drive and there is a transportation service for every need or situation.

Jacksonville Transportation Authority

The Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) is an excellent way to get around the city. They have buses, ferries, trains, trolleys, and even shuttle services on game days. They also have a program called Connexion, which is their paratransit service. Through this program seniors with disabilities can get specialized transportation service to destinations that might not be along regularly scheduled routes. Seniors 65 and older can ride free all you have to do is make sure you get a STAR card and present that anytime you ride.

Taxi services are another way you can get around town and they can be more helpful if you need to get to a destination that isn’t close to a bus or train route. It’s also nice to be able to ride by yourself without everyone else on public transportation. Here in Jacksonville, Checker Cab, Coastal Cab, and Safari Transportation Services all offer taxi rides. These taxis offer rides short distances around town or longer trips to places like the airport and you can even schedule your ride in advance.

Senior Caregiver Rides

If you use an in-home care service, you might be able to get a ride through your caregiver. Many in-home companies offer transportation services whether it’s to run errands or go to a scheduled appointment. ComForcare Home Care, Concierge Care, and Home Instead all located in Jacksonville offer transportation service. Using your caregiver as a transportation service can give both seniors and their families peace of mind because they don’t have to worry about riding with a stranger.

Ride Sharing

Ride sharing services are another good way to get around town and both Uber and Lyft operate in Jacksonville. What’s even nicer about these services is that you can schedule your ride through their app or online. So, even if your loved one isn’t very computer savvy, you can still get them a ride. Make sure you fully understand their fees and charging because it will change throughout the day and be higher during peak travel times.

Safe And Mobile Seniors

Safe and Mobile Seniors is a transportation resource for all seniors in Florida. You can find ride services and other transportation options through their find a ride search option and you can also learn more about senior mobility.
