Irvine Aging-in-Place

Do you want to stay in your home as you age? Home is where your heart is, and probably you are most comfortable when you are at home. There are services to help you live comfortably and independently at home. Homemaker services assist with all the regular chores such cooking, errands, cleaning, and personal care. You can also get help from home health aides with care needs such as therapy, medication, and monitoring your condition.

How to Pay for These Services

Your long-term care insurance policy may cover these expenses if you can get an agreement from your doctor that these services are necessary for you to live independently.  Low-income seniors may be eligible for Medicaid to pay for in-home care.

Some seniors may qualify for home care services such as chore and personal care assistance, protective supervision, meal services, and social programs from the California Department of Aging. Wartime veterans may be entitled to a VA Aid & Attendance pension which could be used to pay in-home care expenses.

Budgeting the Cost

The price to stay in your home could be different from other seniors depending if you need to complete renovations and the number of services you need.  You may have to spend a one-time fee on your home to make it more easily accessible as your health changes.  These updates include grab bars, wheelchair ramps, and handicap accessible shower upgrades.

The average US daily rate for full-time in-home care is about $123 when you use the median of $122 for homemaking services and $125 for home health aide services. If you total these daily rates, that will total around $3,800. In the Irvine area, in-home care costs are a little higher with home health aides and homemaker rates averaging $133 daily, which equals about $4,100 a month.

Choosing a Service Provider

The first step to finding a good in-home care provider is to ask around and see if anyone has any referrals.  You can ask your friends, neighbors, colleagues, or fellow members of church or clubs.  Also, check out the Better Business Bureau website to see if there are any reviews and see what the business is rated.

Be sure to ask the business about insurance, bonding, training, insurance, and their licenses. Other questions you should ask include how they screen future employees, what their payment policies are, and how they schedule services. You may want to get the payment and scheduling procedures in writing for reference.  Also, read the entire contract and make sure you understand it which will prevent any surprises.

Additional Services

Using a homemaking service or getting health assistance can help you live independently; however, sometimes you need extra help or want to give your current caregivers a break.  Multiple websites allow you to search for local help for services such as pet care, home renovations, and other tasks.
