Visit the Spanish Missions

The journey of Franciscans started from modern day Mexico and went north along the California Coast to San Francisco.  The first was Mission San Diego de Alcala.  Each mission is a day’s ride on horseback away from the other, so the Franciscans had a safe place to set up camp and rest at night.

San Juan Capistrano is one of the most famous of these missions and started the Diocese in Orange County. This mission is also famous for the Annual Return of the Swallows.  There is also a museum, chapel, and historic downtown to visit at San Juan Capistrano.
