Over 80% of the Texas population is currently receiving help under Medicaid and many of those participants are seniors. You might think that Medicaid is a complicated process that won’t be able to help with most of your medical care costs, but that isn’t true. Under Medicaid, you could get money to help pay for things like adult day care programs, in-home health aides, transportation to medical appointments, as well as coverage for nursing homes and hospice care. There are a few resources for Houston residents that can help your application process go smoothly.
There are a few requirements when it comes to applying for Medicaid as a senior. First, you must be 65 years old or older or have a disability that is expected to last at least one year or longer. You can also qualify for Medicaid if you need 30 days or more of non-stop care and finally if you have little to no money and no large assets to your name, which doesn’t include things like your house, car, and a few other items.
There are a few different ways that you can apply for Medicaid. One of the easiest ways is to apply online. You can use the Texas benefits portal to find out if you meet the eligibility requirements, apply for benefits, and find answers to frequently asked questions.
If you would prefer to meet with someone in person and get help with your application process, there are a few different locations around Houston you can visit:
Texas Health and Human Services Commission- 10060 Fuqua St. (713) 946-6861 Medicaid Office- 9450 Harwin Dr. (713) 266-5535 Health and Human Services Commission- 8511 N. Houston Rosslyn Rd. (713) 895-6800
Each of these places will have people that can walk you through the eligibility requirements and the application process so you don’t have to worry about making any mistakes. The Health and Human Service Commission can also provide you with access to computers or internet connection, if you don’t have one in your home. Places like the Houston Food Bank and GGC Group Corporation have partnered with HHSC to provide volunteers that can help you navigate the online application process.
Medicaid will act very similarly to any other insurance plan so you can expect to get coverage for things like your regular doctor’s appointments, prescribed medications, hospital stays, and things like X-Rays and dental cleanings. As a senior, you will also have access to a few more services under Medicaid.
These services include things like residing in nursing homes or assisted living facilities, in-home health care, and hospice care. You can visit the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services website to find all the different services offered and which ones are covered under Medicaid.
If you don’t have access to a car or can’t find a ride to a medical appointment, Houston has a transportation service to help you. There are two different types of rides that you can take advantage of. There are fixed routes that make pre-planned stops, so if your appointment is near one of these stops you can use this service.
If you need to go to a specific location there are also demand/response services that will pick you up and drop you off at your destination. To find out more about these services or schedule a ride, you can call the Area Agencies on Agency at (800) 252-9240.
