How to Get Around Houston Without Driving

Houston’s sheer size can be a bit daunting, but it is also what makes the city great. Yet, if you do not have a way to drive safely, getting around Space City can be a pain. Thankfully, if you or your loved ones cannot drive, there are several other solutions. Due to the taxi fleets, service organizations, senior care providers, and public transit in Houston, there are numerous ways for you to travel from one place to the next.

METRO

Public transportation in the form of light rail, lift vans, and buses is available through the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, known simply as METRO. METRO offers special discounts for golden agers. For instance, if you are a Medicare cardholder or between the ages of 65 and 69 years old, you get a 50 percent discount. Seniors 70 and over get to ride for free. You just need to fill out this application. All METRO rail, bus, and van services comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Catch a Taxi

If you want an on-demand option to get to and from the airport or other locations around Houston, you might consider a taxi. Passengers can make advance reservations online or by phone with the many licensed taxi services in Houston, including Yellow Cab, Towncar 2 Fly, and Houston VIP Taxi. Some taxi services will let you prepay for rides taken by others when you want to offer a professional driver, or door-to-door service to your elderly parent or loved one.

Senior Transportation Services

There are many home health care businesses that offer older adults rides to and from appointments and other errands. Some of the organizations in Houston that advertise senior transportation services include Senior Helpers Houston, Sheila’s Angels In-Home Care, and Home Instead Senior Care. The freedom to make as many stops along the way as you would like, companionship and assistance while shopping, knowing your driver if they are also your caregiver, and having the ability to have a driver use your car or theirs are just some of the many advantages to using senior care services for transportation.

On-Demand Ride Shares

You can find rides with Uber in Houston. This means that you can receive door-to-door services, set-up rides in advance, and get rides on demand, if you are good with a smartphone or have family members who can help you out. With these businesses, it is crucial that you know how the pricing works. For example, during peak times, like rush hour, the prices may rise dramatically due to “surge pricing.”

Use Customized Services to Find the Right Ride

If you have no other means of transportation and need to receive medically necessary Medicaid care services, you can get free transportation. You can arrange for these rides by calling 1-855-687-4786. Or, through a network of volunteers called the Volunteer Interfaith Caregivers, you can get free one-on-one transportation to attend religious services, visit clinics and doctors, run errands, go shopping, or pick-up prescriptions.
