Henderson Aging-in-Place

Everyone enjoys freedom, and most likely, you would like to choose where you want to age. If you are like most others, you probably want to stay comfortably and safely in your own home. Whether you live near Lake Las Vegas or in peaceful Anthem, your home is your comfort zone. There are services to help you live comfortably at home whether it is assistance with household chores or your health. Homemaker services will help with it all, providing assistance with cooking, errands, cleaning, and personal care. You can also get help from home health aides for help with therapy, medication, and other medical needs.

How to Pay

Your long-term care insurance policy may cover these services if your doctor confirms you need these services to live independently.  Low-income seniors with minimal assets may be eligible for Medicaid to pay for in-home care. The Nevada Department of Aging and Disability Services provides homemaker services, home care, and managed care if you are eligible. If you are a veteran who served during a war, you may be entitled to a VA Aid & Attendance pension to cover in-home health care.

The Cost

The expense to stay in your home may vary depending on if you need to make any renovations for safety updates for items such as a wheelchair ramp, grab bars, or other home changes such as moving a bedroom downstairs.  It also depends on the services you need.

The average daily rate for full-time in-home care is about $123 ($122 for homemaking services and $125 for home health aide services) in the United States, which totals $3,800 per month. In Henderson/Las Vegas, in-home care costs are similar with home health aides averaging $116 daily and homemaker rates costs about $125 a day which equals about $3,800 a month.

How to Select a Service

It’s always a good idea to ask around for referrals.  Talk to your friends, neighbors, people at your church, or any senior center or club. You can also search the Southern Nevada Better Business Bureau for positive reviews and ratings.

Be sure to talk to the company about insurance, bonding, training, insurance, and their licenses. See how the company completes background checks, drug tests, and other identity tests on potential employees during screening. Find out about payment and how they schedule.  It’s always a good idea to get the details in writing.  Make sure you understand everything in your contract before you sign and make a payment.

Other Service Options

Using a homemaking service or getting health assistance can help you live independently, but sometimes help with other things around the house can be useful.  There are more options online and services available, so you don’t have to keep asking for help from your usual caregivers.

If you need help taking care of a pet, check out Rover.com for dog walking and pet sitting. Favor and TaskRabbit are sites that let you post small tasks you need to get done. For home repairs and remodels, Porch.com and Amazon Home Services can help you find the right contractor or handyman. Be sure you talk to these agencies and are completely comfortable with their training, policies, and employee screenings before you choose to do business with them.  Also, check for online reviews before selecting a service online.
