Pennybyrn offers a rich history of care in the spirit of service.  The Sisters of Poor Servants of the Mother of God opened Maryfield in 1947 as a 22-bed Catholic nursing home. Today it is a nonprofit organization available to seniors of all faiths.

A Historic Church in Greensboro

The first Eucharistic service in Greensboro was in 1870 when few Catholics lived in the area. Mass took place in the families’ homes.  St. Mary’s Parish welcomed black converts to its parish, which was unheard of during the early 1900s.  St. Mary’s Parish began in 1928 and is still active today with weekday Masses and four Masses on Sundays.  Two of the Masses cater to Vietnamese and Spanish speaking residents.

St Paul the Apostle Catholic Church also has various ways to get involved including Knights of Columbus, Small Church Communities, weekday Masses, retreats, and more.

Our Lady of Grace Church also offers weekday Masses along with Sunday Mass. The Church offers ministries to help serve programs such as Habitat for Humanity, Respect Life, Angel Tree, and more.  The Church also has Wednesday morning Bible studies.

The First Catholic Church in Greensboro is Still Active

The first Catholic Mass was in the 1870s when very few Catholics lived in the area.  Benedictine priests would travel from Belmont Abbey to the homes of Catholics.  The first Catholic Church was St. Anne’s and is now known as St. Benedict Catholic Church in honor of these priests.

St. Benedictine holds weekday Masses and two Sunday Masses.
