How Much Does Glendale Assisted Living Cost?

The Glendale area of Arizona is home to about a dozen senior communities that offer assisted living care. Examples of services provided include help with bathing and dressing, preparation of meals, housekeeping and laundry services, grocery shopping, and transportation to doctor’s appointments.

Here’s an overview of assisted living in Glendale to help you make an informed choice. Features include a list of questions to ask when touring assisted living facilities along with suggestions on how to afford the cost of provided services.

Handy Checklist of Questions to Ask When Visiting an Assisted Living Facility

Deciding which assisted living facility or services you want can be a challenging task. Preparation includes taking a tour and having a checklist of items you want to cover during your visit. The Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA) online brochure, Guide to Choosing an Assisted Living Community, covers everything to help guide you through the process.

The ALFA includes a list of questions you should ask and highlights important features to check out when visiting a senior living community. Items to cover include physical features of the facility, social and recreational activities, amenities, plan costs, dining options, health services, and disclosure of policies. Questions you should ask during your visit include:

Are heating and cooling utilities included in the fees? Does the facility allow residents to have pets? Are complimentary transportation provided to residents? Do residents have access to a 24-hour emergency response system? Is Medicaid accepted as payment for services?

How Much do Assisted Living Services Cost in Glendale?

The median annual rates for long-term care services are published in Genworth’s Cost of Care Survey, which includes data for providers across the nation within each of the states. Although Glendale is not featured in the data for Arizona, the figures for nearby Phoenix posted median annual rates for assisted living facilities in 2016 to be $41,640 with projected 5-year annual growth rates of about 3% per year. The national median rates in 2016 were slightly higher at $43,539 with projected increases of 2% per year.

How You Can Budget and Save Money on Assisted Living

If you own your home and are still fairly independent and active, having in-home based assisted living services can help you save money as opposed to living in a senior community. If you live alone and have a friend or relative that is in a similar situation, consider the option of having a roommate. Together you can both share living expenses while receiving assisted living services at home.

At the other end of the spectrum is the option of selling your home and moving in with other family members if they have a spare room available. This is a common solution and often works out well when a senior moves into the home of one of their younger children and then receives in-home assisted living services and care.

Programs That Can Help Pay for Assisted Living Care

A variety of federally funded programs are available to help seniors cover the costs of assisted living services. Medicaid is one option along with Section 8 senior housing and Veterans (VA) Aid & Attendance Pension plans. If you are retired, you can use your social security income to help cover the costs as well as employer-funded pensions. Other possibilities to consider include long-term care insurance. Some seniors can also use the money they get from a reverse mortgage or sell their homes and use the funds to move into a senior living community.
