How to Get Around Garland Without Driving

With how large the region is, Garland is an interesting place to call home. Yet, if you do not have a car or cannot drive safely, getting around the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex can be a pain. When you or your loved one cannot drive, there are several transportation options. Some of the many services offered in Garland include taxi services, service organizations, senior care providers, and public transit.

Garland is one of the communities served by the Dallas Area Rapid Transit’s (DART) curbside services, streetcars, rail, and buses. When golden agers obtain a DART ID card, they are eligible for reduced monthly, daily, and two-hour passes. Also, with the discounted Senior Citizen Annual Pass, you get a full year of unlimited rides on DART along with the Fort Worth and Denton County public transportation systems. DART buses are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act and have spots that anchor wheelchairs securely. You can also bring your service or guide dog.

Taxi Fleets

Taxi fleets are an excellent on-demand alternative for transportation to and from DFW as well as around the city. There is a long list of licensed taxi cabs in the Metroplex that let riders make reservations in advance on the Internet or over the phone. Some businesses in the area are On Time Taxi Cab, Yellow Cab, and Henry’s Cab Service. If you want to hire a professional driver or door-to-door service for a parent or other loved ones, there are some taxi services that let you prepay for rides for other people.

Special Transportation Services for Seniors

Many homemaking and home health services offer their clients transportation to and from appointment and errands. Some organizations in Garland that promote their transportation services online are September Services, Home Helpers, and BrightStar Care. When you use a senior care service for rides, you experience a number of advantages: the option of making as many stops as you need along the way, companionship and aid while shopping, knowing your driver if they also serve as your caregiver, and the freedom to use your vehicle or the driver’s car.

Ride Sharing

Both Uber and Lyft run in Garland. This means that smartphone-savvy older adults or their loved ones can get door-to-door services, set up rides in advance, or obtain transportation on demand, but you need to know how the fares work. For example, the prices dramatically increase with surge pricing, which occurs during peak times, such as rush hour.

Personalized Assistance with Finding the Right Ride

My Ride Dallas is the creation of nearly a hundred Metroplex agencies. They have teamed up to help retirees and people with disabilities get access to transportation. If you are having a hard time finding rides with your schedule, the My Ride staff can help you in creating a customized ride plan to get around the city.

The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services can also help seniors find safe rides. Call 1-855-687-3255 for advance ride arrangements for health care needs if you receive Medicaid. Or, you can contact Health and Human Services at 2-1-1 to find out what services are available near you.
