Driving doesn’t seem to be such a big deal to most of us. However, if you are a senior that can’t drive anymore or doesn’t have access to a car, doing simple things like going to the grocery store may feel out of the question. Fortunately, that doesn’t have to be the case because Fresno has a variety of transportation options to help you get to your destination quickly and safely.
Fresno Area Express (FAX) runs 16 different bus routes as well as the paratransit service Handy Ride. Handy Ride is for seniors with disabilities that cannot ride on the regular bus and offer wheelchair accommodations as well as door-to-door service so you can be dropped off right at your destination. All of FAX buses are fitted with wheelchair ramps and straps to secure wheelchairs in place while the bus is in motion, so if you do need to use the bus you can safely. Seniors can also get a discounted rate if they are 65 and older and have a valid form of ID.
Both Uber and Lyft are ride-sharing services that operate in the Fresno area and they are fairly easy to use. Whenever you need a ride, all you have to do is use their app or go online to schedule a pickup, no matter where you are. You can even have someone else arrange the ride for you if you don’t have a smartphone or computer. Their rates will change throughout the day so be aware that you will have to pay more if you travel during high demand times.
If you don’t feel comfortable using a ride-sharing service you can always call a taxi. In fact, if you are 70 and older, you can use the Measure C Taxi Scrip Program. This is a program that helps seniors get around in taxis at a 75% discount but you do have to apply and be accepted to the program. 24/7 Taxi Clovis and Black Tie Car Service are just a few of the companies you can find in Fresno.
Another option that many seniors have is to use their in-home caregiver as a form of transportation. Since so many seniors opt to stay in their home to receive care many providers make sure they can offer some form of transportation services like grocery shopping or appointment drop-offs. This can give both seniors and their family members peace of mind because they don’t have to worry about their loved one being along while they are out. Senior Helpers, Right at Home, and Amdal In Home Care are all located in Fresno and offer transportation options.
If you still need further transportation options, Fresno County Network of Care has listed all the different types of senior transportation in the area. Some of these services require payment while others are free of charge. You can click on any link in the list to find out more about each program and see if it works for you.
