El Paso Funeral Homes

To help you honor your loved one, you want to hire the best funeral home to help you mourn and pay your respects. Be careful because funeral homes need to make money too, and you are going through an emotional time. Make sure you compare multiple funeral homes by services and prices. You will also need to determine your budget and stick to it. Not all funeral homes are the same, so before you decide, determine what services are essential to you.

The rights of a customer

Funeral homes are required by law to give you all pricing in writing or when you call.  Federal Trade Commission law states funeral homes have to offer services outside of a package deal. Texas law ensures customers that funeral homes will provide a comprehensive price list of all services before deciding on arrangements.

The rules state you can:

Receive a detailed list with all the prices of products and services you chose in your funeral plan.

Be allowed to choose a different burial container other than a casket for cremation no matter where you reside.

Decide to use a casket or urn bought at a different location and be able to use it for the burial.

Decline to use embalming services. Texas law requires that the funeral home receives either your spoken or written consent before starting the embalming process.

Evergreen Funeral Home is an example of a funeral home that gives a listing of prices on their websites. Caskets range in price, so funeral companies will typically give you a range. Some companies, like Boulger Funeral Home, will display caskets and pricing. The Dignity Memorial network allows you to create your funeral service choices ahead of time with their online planning tool.

Selecting a funeral home

If possible, you may want to begin searching for funeral homes before you have to plan services. Ask family, friends, and co-workers for referrals. Check out online reviews. Search the El Paso Better Business Bureau website for BBB-accredited funeral homes. If you want to verify licenses, you can search all funeral service providers through the Texas Funeral Service Commission website.

After you narrow down to a few homes, compare prices and services. Ask for each funeral home’s General Price List either in person or on the phone. You should also request an itemized list of prices for caskets or cremation containers. The Federal Trade Commission offers a Funeral Pricing Checklist, which provides valuable insight. Come up with a list of questions to ask all the funeral homes. Take note of how you are treated when you are a just a shopper.

Keeping to your budget

You want to honor your loved one, but you also don’t want to create debt while doing so. Make a list of services that are essential and avoid adding to that list. You should establish your budget before you begin visiting funeral homes. To help you plan and create a budget, the Funeral Consumers Alliance provides tips and information on saving money.
