The city of Detroit has suffered a long road of economic hardship, but the citizens of Detroit are seeing signs of growth and rebirth. The community is pulling together to gentrify and beautify old neighborhoods. New people are moving in to enjoy the scenic downtown Riverwalk and the promise and hope of the future of Detroit. The low cost of starting a business is attracting entrepreneurs. Starting in the heart of the downtown area and stretching about five miles in all directions, housing is safe and affordable for Detroit seniors.

The Luella Hannan Memorial Foundation offers many services for seniors, including a senior center, case management, a law clinic, and various supports for different illnesses. The foundation also sponsors Hannan House, a senior apartment housing complex.

Bridging Communities Inc. is a grassroots collaboration that brings together local unions, businesses, residents, social services agencies, and faith-based organizations to meet the needs of Detroit seniors. The eldercare program provides professional assessments for seniors and then matches them with caring volunteers that can meet their needs. The program offers case management, companionship and visiting, transportation, minor home repairs and other helpful services. The program operates an intergenerational program in the Chadsey-Condon neighborhood where children and seniors mutually benefit from each other.

Jewish Senior Life is primarily a Jewish agency for senior citizens, but the program serves seniors from all faiths and beliefs. Jewish Senior Life operates an adult day care center where seniors can get nutritious lunches, participate in exercise classes, get help with haircare, enjoy music and entertainment, and take cultural and educational classes. Jewish seniors who eat Kosher can arrange for Kosher meals to go. Transportation is also available for seniors.

Henry Ford Health System offers a team-centered approach that includes a focus on senior health. The program offers medical services, behavioral health services, a spine clinic, a falls prevention clinic, home health services, joint replacement, a pain clinic, and a wound-care clinic. The program also helps elderly frail people live in their homes as long as possible. The geriatric clinic specializes in dementia, balance, weight control, and other geriatric needs. Physicians see patients at the clinics or in their homes.

South Eastern Michigan Indians Inc. was formed to meet the cultural, economic, and social needs of the Native American Indian population in south eastern Michigan. It’s a non-profit organization that offers congregate senior meals. The program also offers legal services, assistance with chores, tax assistance, utility assistance, transportation, food, home repairs, and help applying for Medicare.

St. Patrick Senior Center is a non-profit organization that offers programs to enhance the physical and psychological well-being of Detroit’s senior citizens. The program provides nutritious meals and offers a health clinic, classes, trips, special events, and transportation. St. Patrick’s Senior Center meets the needs of the diverse population of Detroit’s seniors.

Detroit and the surrounding areas are a melting pot of diverse cultures and religions. The non-profit organizations and senior centers developed programs to meet the needs of all Detroit seniors. Detroit is an area where seniors help seniors and the community recognizes the value of intergenerational interactions.
