Senior-Friendly Workplaces in Denver

While many people start thinking about retirement as they get older, perhaps you’re not ready to get out of the game and want to find a new job or possibly a new career. You might be concerned that it’s too late to make the switch. If you’ve been laid off, you might be worried that you’ll never find a new job in today’s market. Even though there have been studies done that show older people take longer to find a new job or end up working for less money, that doesn’t always have to be the case. With the right tools at your disposal in Denver, your new job could be closer than you think.

Job Resources For Seniors in Denver

While looking for a new job later in life can feel overwhelming at first, you just need to find the right place to start. The Denver Office of Economic Development is a great place to look once you begin your search for a new job. They have services like free training and workshops that include topics such as resume building and interviewing skills. You can also have your current skills tested to make sure that they are up to par and will help entice employers to view your resume.

This office also offers individual training programs so you can get one-on-one attention to make sure you’re ready to interview for new jobs and obtain new skills. You can also get a digital literacy certification here that will take you through seven different levels of computer literacy including social media to show that you’re able to keep up with technological advances.

The Arapahoe/Douglas Works WorkForce Center is another place that offers a program specifically for older workers. The [email protected] has specialized services that are targeted to workers 55 and over with things like mock interviews, computer classes, customized workshops, and access to computer labs.

Job Training and Placement for Low-Income Seniors

Another good option, especially for seniors who have a low-income and need to support themselves or their families while looking for a new job, is the Senior Community Service Employment Program or SCSEP. This is a program that is funded on the federal level and helps seniors get new job skills while still earning a paycheck.

There are a few requirements you need to meet to be enrolled in this program like age and income level. If you meet those requirements, you will be placed in a job around your community that is subsidized and that matches your career goals. You could be working in a place like Goodwill or perhaps as a teacher’s assistant in a local public school. However, no matter where you go, you will get on-the-job training and still earn money.

Once you’re training is complete, which usually lasts a few months, you will get help with job placement. SCSEP is a good way to not only learn new skills but also serve your community.

Other Options for Senior Job-Seekers in Denver

If you’re looking for a few more options around the Denver area you can check with the Community Assistance Resource guide located on the Denver Public Library website. AARP Foundation WorkSearch is a website that is entirely built for older workers to polish their existing skills, gain new ones, and make their way into the workforce.

Denver City also has resources and services that are geared toward veterans. As long as you meet the requirements, you can use these to help with your job search. Another option for mature workers is to start their own business. If that sounds like something you would like to do, you can go to the Denver Metro Small Business Development Center to get all the help you need.

Just because you are older and later into your career, doesn’t mean you can’t find the right workplace for you. There are plenty of senior-friendly workplaces in the Denver area and these resources and support should help you find them.
