Low-income seniors in Corpus Christi often rely on Medicaid to help them cover the cost of their health care. Services like hospital stays, doctors appointments, and rehabilitation services are often included in Medicaid coverage. Seniors can also use Medicaid for adult day care services, prescription medicine, medical supplies, and transportation to medical appointments. It’s important to know all of the Medicaid resources in Corpus Christi, so if you ever need Medicaid benefits, you know where to turn.
Not every person will be eligible for Medicaid. Seniors need to be at least 65 years old, or they need to be blind, disabled or require continuous care in a nursing home or other facility for at least 30 days. There are also financial requirements, and you will have to meet a certain income level based on your household size, and you can’t own valuable assets other than your house or car. You can quickly pre-screen your eligibility online with this tool here.
There are a few different ways to apply for benefits. The easiest way is to go online and apply there, and you can do this one of two ways. You can go to Your Texas Benefits and apply through their website and also manage your account once you get benefits or you can go to healthcare.gov and apply there.
You can also apply in person at any Health and Human Services Commission building, which is a good option for seniors who have a lot of complicated questions or issues with online applications. There are two locations in Corpus Christi you can visit:
5155 Flynn Parkway #1 (361) 855-9924
4410 Dillon Lane #28 (361) 857-0878
If you can’t make it to any of these locations, you can search for other HHSC offices on Your Texas Benefits. You can also call these offices and have them mail you an application to fill out and then send it back once completed.
If you lack computer or internet access and you still want to apply online, you can go to any Corpus Christi Public Library branch and use their computers. You do need to have a valid library card, and printing will cost $.15 per page.
There are a lot of different services that Medicaid will cover, and you should look at your personal benefits to understand your coverage. Standard Medicaid benefits will usually include doctor’s or dentist appointments, hospital and nursing home stays, prescription medicine, outpatient services, x-rays, and lab work. Other benefits could include rehabilitation services, home health care options, long-term care facilities, and adult day care services.
To see if a provider accepts Medicaid, you can check with the Texas Medicaid & Healthcare Partnership database or find an approved nursing home through the Department of Aging and Disability Services list.
If you have an appointment but do not have the funds or means to get there, Texas Medicaid can help you out. They can arrange for you to get a ride through public transportation or shuttle services. They can also reimburse a driver that takes you to and from your appointments. This service is only for non-emergency transportation, and you need to make sure to arrange your ride at least two days in advance. Just call (855) 687-3255 to schedule your ride.
