Franciscans started various missions from Mexico and north along the California Coast before eventually making it to San Francisco. The first mission is mentioned above and is Mission San Diego de Alcala. All locations are a day on horseback away from each other so the Franciscans would have a safe place to sleep.
San Juan Capistrano is one of the most famous of these missions. This mission is also famous for the Annual Return of the Swallows.
