The federal government offers this health insurance program. It is available to Americans over the age of 65 and to younger people with disabilities and other health conditions. It is divided into 4 separate parts – A, B, C, and D.

Part A: This covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facilities, hospice care, and some home health care options.

Part B: This covers items similar to other health insurance including doctor’s visits, outpatient care, medical devices and supplies, and preventative care.

There is a local service offered through the North Carolina Department of Insurance. The Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) assists and counsels beneficiaries and caregivers about Medicare, Medicare supplements, Medicare Advantage, and long-term care insurance. There are local counselors available in each county to assist you.

Medicare offers an online Physician Compare locator to help you find Charlotte-area doctors. You can choose doctors that accept the Medicare-approved amount, so you will not receive an additional bill. A quick search shows 19 doctors specializing in Geriatric medicine within 15 miles of Charlotte. Expanding your search to all general practice doctors increases results to 894. This result includes doctors that may charge slightly more than the Medicare cost if you don’t mind paying an additional fee.

You will find information including location, contact details, hospital privileges, and what types of Medicare payments they accept. These results are limited to group practices.

You can also search and compare Medicare and Medicaid-certified nursing homes in the Charlotte area through Medicare’s website. You can see ratings on staff, health inspections, and quality measures. You can also read stats on the facility including a number of patients, ratios of staff members, and any fines incurred.
