Live Like a Local in Austin

You’ve just arrived in the capital of Texas, and you want to get the most out of your experience, which is great! There is so much to do in this sprawling Texas city, and if you’re only here for a short while, you want to hit all the best spots. After you’ve visited the state capitol building, the Bullock Texas State History Museum, and LBJ Library and Museum, here are a few of the places you can go and live just like the locals!

Eat Like An Austinite

Austin is known for their Tex-Mex food and Torchy’s Tacos is one of the best places to get a delicious meal. They have locations all over Texas, including 17 right in Austin. You can choose from their delicious array of tacos that feature fried avocados, slow roasted pork carnitas, and Jamaican jerk chicken. If you’re in the mood for a breakfast taco, you’re in luck because Torchy’s has nine different varieties all served with eggs, meat, or cheese.

BBQ is everywhere in Texas, so you don’t want to miss out on one of the best at Franklin Barbecue. Make sure you get there early because they’re only open for lunch and close once they’ve sold all their BBQ, which happens daily! They offer meat like brisket, pork, and ribs by the pound or you can get it on a sandwich. Pair it with a traditional side of slaw and an iced tea, and you’ll be eating just like the locals!

If you want a fine dining experience, check out Truluck’s in downtown Austin. They serve a variety of seafood like ahi tuna or salmon and steaks, but they are best known for their crabs. They also offer a gluten-free menu for anyone who has dietary restrictions.

Shop Till You Drop in Austin

Austin is home to plenty of shopping, but The Domain is the epitome of mall shopping. It features 100 upscale and mainstream retail stores as well as dozens of restaurants, some of which are exclusive to the mall. You can find jewelry at Tiffany’s, the latest fashion at the Banana Republic, or grab a custom pizza at California Pizza Kitchen.

If you want to enjoy shopping and the great outdoors, then head over to the 2nd Street District. This outdoor shopping mall features some of Austin’s best local shops, dining, and entertainment. You can find a new guitar at Austin Rocks, modern furniture at Blu Dot, and custom jewelry at Eliza Page and help support local small businesses at the same time.

Downtown Austin is also a great place to find local shops to stock up on your favorite things. There are bookstores, music stores, high-end boutiques, and art galleries all throughout the downtown area.

Hair By Texas

Big hair and Texas just seem to go together, but even if you aren’t looking for a fancy do, you can still find fabulous salons in Austin. Jose Luis Salon & Boutique offers the latest hair techniques like blowouts, cuts, and colors. They also have skin services that include facial treatments performed by a professional esthetician and a boutique where you can find local jewelry, stationery, and home goods.

Milk + Honey is the total spa package. You can get a haircut or color, bridal up-dos, and extensions as well as visit their full spa. At the spa, you can relax with a massage, get a mani or pedi, and pamper your skin with a facial.

No matter what you decide to do, there are plenty of spots to hit in Austin. Head out and have fun!
