Austin seniors who love animals will enjoy volunteering at Austin Pets Alive!
Austin Pets Alive is a private, nonprofit animal shelter that relies heavily on volunteers to support all of their programs. You’ll be a valuable team member helping them provide care for rescued dogs and cats as they wait to be adopted.
Austin Pets Alive volunteers can be responsible for walking and exercising shelter dogs, feeding and grooming shelter animals so they are healthy and attractive for people looking to adopt a pet, as well as helping conduct fundraising campaigns.
For seniors who enjoy the wild side, try volunteering at the Austin Zoo! The Austin Zoo has two volunteer shifts available, seven days a week; 10:00 am to 2:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
Volunteers at the zoo will perform varied duties that can include helping with zoo laundry (no, the animals don’t wear clothes), animal food preparation, and kitchen duties.
For active seniors who aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty, there are a couple of really cool volunteer jobs:
Get involved with habitat maintenance and learn interesting information about what it takes to keep certain species of animal happy in their zoo home.
Participate in grounds keeping projects and enjoy making the Zoo a beautiful place for people to spend the day.
If you enjoy working with children, the Austin Independent School District can use your help. School volunteers are critical components of the Austin educational system. By volunteering to tutor and mentor children in subjects such as early math and literacy, you free the teaching staff to prepare lesson plans and focus on coursework. If you speak another language, they’ll be happy to have you help our newer citizens learn about their new home.
Do you enjoy the outdoors? Are you proud of your green thumb? Then Austin Parks and Recreation would love to have you as a volunteer!
As a volunteer with Austin Parks and Recreation, you’ll enjoy making your city an attractive place for Austinites looking for a beautiful green space where they can relax.
You’ll be relied on to help maintain and repair the city’s playgrounds and recreational facilities. Park volunteers are important to maintain the safety and beauty of Austin’s gorgeous preserves and its beautiful trails.
The Zilker Botanical Garden needs you to help with their educational programs! Volunteers will share their knowledge with young visitors and enjoy the opportunity to learn more about botany, butterflies, dinosaurs and even the origin of many plant-based foods. Use this sampling of volunteer opportunities as a springboard, and find the right place for you!
